It has been three years since fans last saw Riko and Reg at the end of Made in Abyss Season 1 in 2017. Although their story continued in three movies since then, viewers are still clamoring to see Made in Abyss Season 2.
Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul hinted at the coming of Made in Abyss Season 2 when its end credits revealed: "to be continued." A promotional video was then dropped, confirming the latest sequel would be for production, per Epic Dope.
The clip didn't give a glimpse of the main characters, but it showed a landscape that teased the coming mystery. This scene might be teasing Rico and Reg are inching closer to the former's mother as they are now getting closer to the deepest point of the Abyss.
The new season is expected to pick up where the previous installment left off. Despite the dark turn of events after a friend's demise and the shocking news about Reg, others will continue their adventure into the deep Abyss.
However, instead of an anime series, TechRadar24 reported that some fans believed the second season would be a movie, but it is quite impossible due to the vastness of manga's new story arc. To fully feature the next tale, it is more fitting to make an anime series instead of a film.
Although Kinema Citrus already confirmed the coming of Made in Abyss Season 2, its production might be delayed due to the lack of source material. The creators ran off of enough manga chapters to complete a full season, but with the drop of Volume 9, the studio only needed one more volume to continue the work.
The production of the new season may only commence when Volume 10 comes out anytime this year. So, when will the new season come out?
With the yet-to-start production and lack of materials, it may take a lot of time before fans see the return of Riko and Reg on Made in Abyss Season 2. According to Screenrant, there are no words yet about the second installment's official release, but viewers are expecting it to drop in 2021.
After winning Anime of the Year at the 2017 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, a new season will surely be in the works. However, it remains to be seen how long the anime will stay on the air or how many seasons it will have. There may be more movie-adaptations coming, featuring Riko and Reg, than the anime itself.
