This Is Us season 5 is on its mandatory winter break at the moment after airing its first four episodes on NBC. The family drama series goes on hiatus, which isn't surprising for fans since the show sticks to its yearly schedule. The only difference this time is that it started a bit late due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This Is Us season 5 had a delayed premiere date because of the current global health crisis. The previous seasons often arrive around September to align with the NBC Fall schedule. However, the current installment didn't come out until Oct. 27.
Despite the delay, the series still follows its traditional calendar and has now entered its holiday break. The wait may not be that long since it's been already confirmed the show will be returning in the first week of January, Tuesday, Jan. 5.
As for the story, This Is Us season 5 continues following stories set in the present and past. The series still includes Milo Ventimiglia's Jack Pearson -- through flashbacks -- despite him being dead. Since the show incorporated a pandemic-themed storyline, some ensemble plots have been scarce.
While only for episodes aired this year, This Is Us season 5 already introduced many interesting narratives that will be explored throughout the current installment. The Pearson siblings will have their own arc, each dealing with personal challenges and issues.
For Randall (Sterling K. Brown), his story revolves around him facing his struggles with therapy. As seen in episode 4, his life will be even more complicated after finding out the truth about his mother. He learned that his biological mom survived her overdose incident.
Meanwhile, Kate (Chrissy Metz) and her husband Toby's (Chris Sullivan) journey in adopting a child leads them into a different path. The two are determined to push the process, but their plan will bring back painful memories. She's forced to reconnect with her past relationship with Marc (Austin Abrams).
On the other hand, Kevin (Justin Hartley) must learn how to deal with his professional and personal life. He feels that his current situation demands a lot of his time and consumes most of his energy. At the same time, he needs to navigate his relationship with Madison (Caitlin Thompson).
Beyond the Pearson siblings, This Is Us season 5 will also address their mother's, Rebecca (Mandy Moore), deteriorating health. Jack's brother, Nicky (Griffin Dune), is set to return in the current installment. He's present in the flash-forward scene where it seemingly hinted at the final days of Rebecca.
