Kate Middleton did experience some pressure when Meghan Markle became part of the royal family and went to the extent of consulting with new advisers to step up her game. But it was a healthy competition between the sisters-in-law, and it had to do with their fashion choices.

According to fashion and royal expert Elizabeth Holmes, Kate consulted with new stylists around the same time Meghan officially started her royal engagements. For years, Prince William's wife stuck with classic and modest pieces as a working royal. However, in the last few years, she picked some unexpected wardrobe choices, with colors and prints that highlight her best features.

The author of the book, HRH So Many Thoughts on Royal Style, said that the timing of the Duchess of Cambridge's style improvements also coincided with her return to work after giving birth to her third child, Prince Louis. Holmes said that Kate had more fashionable ensembles and various styles when she resumed her duties after her third maternity leave in 2017.

With Meghan also gracing the pages of fashion magazines since her engagement to Prince Harry in that same year, the royal scene became more exciting when the Duchess of Cambridge stepped up to match her sister-in-law's stylish presence.

But, with or without Meghan to compete with, Kate has consistently topped the list of most stylish women. She was recently voted the most stylish royalty in the world and the only royal to be in the top 10 list in a poll from Farfetch.

Royal fans especially liked many of Kate's remarkable dresses during the pandemic lockdown. The Duchess of Cambridge usually wears clothes from the U.K.'s best designers like Emilia Wickstead, Stella McCartney, and Suzannah. On some occasions, she also mixes up her wardrobe with clothes that she has worn before.

Kate, however, wasn't always the stylish royal that the people have come to love. In her college years, Prince William's then-girlfriend liked wearing jeans as she was quite a sporty girl. She also dressed down in tank tops and shorts and was once caught in paparazzi photos sitting in public with a slacking posture and an exposed cleavage.

When she's off duty from royal engagements, Kate likes to wear shirts, sweaters and jeans. But, sources close to the Duchess of Cambridge said she doesn't like wasting money on clothes, especially since her wardrobe might be scrutinized by the public who funds the royal family's lifestyle.
