Chicago P.D. season 8 is on hiatus again after airing just two episodes in November. The police procedural is not coming until next year, but fans can expect many interesting stories once it returns. For instance, Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek's (Patrick John Flueger) relationship will be further fleshed out.

Burgess and Ruzek's storyline is one of the most interesting parts of Chicago P.D. season 8 -- beyond the actions. The two do have feelings for each other, yet that doesn't necessarily mean they'll decide to be together immediately. There are a lot of things that needed to be explored, especially after what happened to them as of late.

The two were excited to welcome their baby and already preparing for the child's arrival. However, their plans fell apart when Burgess suffered a miscarriage after saving a young woman's life. Both of them tried to process the loss, with Squerciati's character needing physical and emotional recovery.

Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Rick Eid discussed how Burgess and Ruzek's relationship will progress and what the future holds for them. He said that the major shake-up in their story is that they lost their baby. This would affect both of them in Chicago P.D. season 8.

Despite the pain that they're experiencing, Eid made it clear that the relationship of the two will continue to "evolve and deepen." Burgess and Ruzek aren't romantically involved, but the showrunner teased that there is a "possibility for a real relationship."

Many fans are rooting for them, and it looks like they'll be even closer in Chicago P.D. season 8. Although there is no guarantee that they'll get married in the future, Eid's statement suggests Burgress and Ruzek will be there for each other during the difficult times.

The upcoming installment will also explore other characters' storylines -- including Kevin Atwater's (LaRoyce Hawkins). He needs to stand for what is right and must ensure that justice is being served right away. When it comes to his romantic life, it seems like something was stored for him.

In a separate interview with the aforementioned outlet, Eid teased that there's "definitely a chance" for Atwater to have his love interest in the latest installment. Nothing is officially confirmed, but this is a chance for the character to have a personal storyline.

Chicago P.D. season 8 is set to return on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, on NBC.
