There are a lot of ways how to explore Upton and Halstead's relationship in Chicago P.D. season 8. For instance, Upton will spend most of her time in New York, so she may be able to contemplate some of her feelings toward Halstead while reflecting her life back in Chicago at the same time.
Because of this, she may want to act some of her feelings that haven't been explored. As for Halstead, he might be hesitant to deal with his feelings at first, but he'll eventually realize what Upton means to him. Also, a certain incident may suddenly happen that will bring them closer together.
Speaking to TV Guide, showrunner Rick Eid said he's excited to dig deeper into Upton and Halstead's relationship. They will explore how these two could carry their professional lives and relationship at the same time. It's clear they have an emotional connection and understand each other.
But then, everything would not be smooth sailing for them. Upton and Halstead might be facing some problems along the way and it could challenge their relationship and bond. Their potential relationship might be rockier in the middle.
But in the end, they could find a way on how to stick together. Even though their potential romance may not happen overnight, it would be nice to see them doing whatever they can to make their relationship work and facing problems together.
Meanwhile, CarterMatt noted there would be a time jump between the previous installment and Chicago P.D. season 8. So, while it would be nice to see Upton and Halstead reuniting, it wouldn't make sense if they'd get together during the time jump.
The previous installment ended with Upton still in New York. She and Halstead had a quick FaceTime call and admitted they do miss each other. Originally, Upton is set to return in episode 21 but season 7 was cut short due to COVID-19 pandemic. She's now coming back in Chicago P.D. season 8 instead.
When it comes to the release date of Chicago P.D. season 8, nothing is certain at the moment. Filming may not start immediately because of the real-life health crisis. But as per some reports, the new installment may likely arrive in fall 2020, if ever, in late September.
