Riverdale season 5 is officially coming next year on The CW after meeting several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the teen drama returns, fans will see many weird things happening to most of the characters. In fact, the recently-unveiled trailer showed what's next for everyone and the Core Four.

Riverdale season 5 kicks off where the season 4 finale left off, which means the prom and graduation are at the center of everything. These two events were supposed to be part of the previous installment, but the remaining three episodes weren't aired due to the production shut down.

Now, the first trailer gives fans a glimpse at what the prom would look like. It seemed to be romantic at first, but the clip gets creepy, eventually. The teens are receiving more disturbing videotapes, something that they've been getting in the fourth installment.

This time, however, the Core Four -- Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) -- have been receiving videotapes. The weird part here is that the videos featured a masked version of themselves doing "disturbing, violent things."

This could be one of the central mysteries in the early run of Riverdale season 5. In addition, the trailer showed a crying Veronica saying that something happened between Betty and Archie, something that could tear the Core Four apart.

Beyond the trailer, it looks like someone from the past might be returning in the fifth installment. While nothing is confirmed, some speculated that the series might resurrect a certain character, who has been long dead. After all, the poster featured a hand coming out of the grave.

The image showed a zombie-like hand, with the Sweetwater River in the background. Yet, it remains to be seen whether the series opts to literally bring someone back from the dead, given that it hasn't touched supernatural elements - unlike its sister series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

When these mysteries wrap up, Riverdale season 5 is heading to a 7-year time jump. New stories will be introduced, as well as new characters. The Core Four will be living their lives as adults, with Veronica married to someone while Jughead in a relationship with another woman.

The series goes in a different direction, allowing each character to explore new places. The time jump could also allow the story to have some sort of reset. Now that the Core Four were adults, they could be dealing with more mature stuff, as well.

Riverdale season 5 is set to premiere on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, on The CW.
