This Is Us season 5 is set to return next year on NBC. The romantic comedy-drama goes on hiatus again after airing four episodes this calendar year. Fans can expect many exciting stories moving forward, and some notable characters from the past could show up.
Nicky (Griffin Dunne), Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge), and Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison) all played an interesting role in the series. Now, there is a possibility that one of these three characters will make an appearance in This Is Us season 5.
In a recent interview with TVLine, co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker confirmed that one of these faces is returning later in the season. Yet, he didn't reveal who among the three will show up, so fans may need to wait for a little while to find out who it is.
According to CarterMatt, Nicky would be the top candidate since he appeared numerous times in the flash-forwards. As for Sophie and Cassidy, their appearance seems unlikely unless one of them ends up with Kevin Pearson (Justin Hartley).
It can be noted that he and Madison (Caitlin Thompson) expect the arrival of their twins. Although the two weren't romantically involved, they tried to make things work to be a good parent. But then, it remains to be seen who Kevin's wife is in the flash-forward.
Beyond this potential appearance, This Is Us season 5 needs to address other plotlines, as well. For instance, there are a lot of mysteries when it comes to Randall Pearson's (Sterling K. Brown) biological mother, Laurel (Jennifer C. Holmes).
It looks like some of the questions will be answered once the series comes back. Speaking to Deadline, director/executive producer Ken Olin teased that the sixth episode may shed light on Laurel's backstory. Fans will find out what happened to her and how she ended up with a fisherman.
Olin said that episode 6 would be one of their standalone episodes in This Is Us season 5, and it's going to revolve around Laurel. Viewers will learn more about her and her past, especially involving Randall. Some secrets might be revealed along the way.
Moreover, exploring Laurel's backstory allows Randall to have some peace. He has many questions about his past, and this is an opportunity for him to know himself more. It's a huge part of his life that he needs to uncover.
