Unconfirmed reports say that Apple's iPhone 13 models may feature ProMotion and LTPO display to allow it to achieve 120Hz refresh rates.

There are widespread rumors that future models of the iPhone, particularly Apple's iPhone 13 Pro models set for release next year, could have low-temperature polycrystalline oxide or LTPO OLED panels. This would allow the device to achieve a high refresh rate of up to 120Hz and have an always-on display capability. Rumors also say that the future model might also feature ProMotion.

Whispered talks circulating online say that Samsung and LG will maintain their roles as major suppliers of OLED panels for Apple. In two of the rumored iPhone 13 models, however, Apple will instead use the new LTPO OLED display with ProMotion technology. Industry observers say the two models could be the Pro variants of the new iPhone 13, slated for release next year. Many note that Apple Watch Series 4 used this kind of display. With the panel's variable refresh rate, Apple might finally usher in 90Hz, or even refresh rates in its rumored iPhone 13 models.

In a report by TheElec, a Korean news website, the rumored iPhone 13's OLED panels will become more technologically sophisticated as compared to those used in the present iPhone 12 series. There are also speculations that the Cupertino tech giant will introduce this new LTPO and ProMotion display technology in only two of its rumored four models. Such features would allow these future iPhone models to reach 120Hz displays. The news website added that all of the iPhone 13 models, however, will utilize on-cell touchscreen technology.

On-cell technology allows the display on smartphones to be leaner and allows the device to have better touch response since its multi-touch functionality resides on a thin-film transistor or TFT instead of a separate component located above the display. With LTPO technology, the Cupertino tech giant may now reduce the refresh rate to a minimum along with the brightness, allowing the phone to have an always-on display capability that users might prefer. The rumored iPhone 13 could also increase its refresh rate beyond 60Hz, or up to 120Hz displays, for apps that take advantage of it, a feature similar to the ProMotion technology already present in iPads.

Nevertheless, unless Apple confirms the rumors about the future iPhone 13 having LTPO OLED displays and ProMotion technology, everything remains speculative. This is because, in May of this year, the rumor mill churned out reports that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max would also have 120Hz displays, but rumors turned out to be false. So even if Apple uses LTPO OLED displays and ProMotion technology on the rumored iPhone 13 Pro models, there is no guarantee as regards their type of available features.
