Fans will soon see the return of Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and the rest of the gang in the upcoming Shrek 5. It may have been ten years since this hilarious group graces the big screen, but they will all make a triumphant comeback.

With the long wait, many believe NBC Universal has canceled Shrek 5. However, the animated movie will see the light of the day.

According to BlockToro, NBC aims to expand the franchise by making the fifth movie. The film is, reportedly, now in production, and it will be a reboot instead of a direct sequel.

Michael McCullers, the man behind the scripts of Austin Power: The Spy Who Shagged Me and The Boss Baby, will be writing the new film's script. There are rumors he is already done penning its story, and it will be a "fresh vision to the storyline."

There are theories the next movie installment will feature modern technology as Shrek learns how to use gadgets. There are also claims that it will reveal Shrek's grandkids, so there may be a significant time jump.

Screenrant added that when the franchise was still with Dreamworks, Jeffrey Katzenberg revealed Shrek 5 would be the final chapter of the series, and it would be an origin story. It would tell how Shrek ended in the swamp, giving a more in-depth look to the character.

Fans would know why he preferred to be alone and hated interacting with others. To recall, everything just started when he met Donkey and the need to save a princess that stopped his plan to die alone and be miserable.

If the film pushes through, it will feature the original cast members. Fans will once hear the voices of Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona.

In addition, when Illumination bought Dreamworks, it only kept two franchises: Mario and Shrek. This only means that the film will continue on time.

In fact, in an interview with Chris Meledandri in 2018, the founder and Illumination CEO used the words "reviving" and "revisiting" Shrek and even Puss 'n' Boots when talking toVariety. The film producer was not interested in doing a total revamp, but something that would not be like just another movie in a "series of sequels."

Although Shrek 5 is yet to be confirmed, its IMDb page already has an Untitled Shrek Reboot set to be out in September 2022. The credits noted that Meledandri would handle its story, while McCullers would oversee the screenplay.
