This Is Us season 5 episode 6 is coming next week on NBC, with the title "Birth Mother." This is going to be an emotional episode as Randall Pearson (Sterling K. Brown) is about to uncover an important part of his past. The episode title alone suggests that he's going to learn more about his biological mother.
The official synopsis of This Is Us season 5 episode 6 didn't reveal too much detail on what's coming ahead aside from noting that Randall will uncover "new truths" about his past. But, the official promo featured a lot of emotional moments, with NBC hyping the episode up as an "exceptional hour."
Within This Is Us season 5 episode 6, the truth about Randall's past will be explored -- particularly what happened to his birth mother, Laurel (Jennifer Holmes). Some parts of her life have already been addressed, thanks to Hai (Vien Hong). He revealed that she didn't die until 2015.
Laurel lived her life after William Hill (Ron Cephas Jones) presumed she's dead. While it's unknown as of yet where she went, it was believed that she resided in New Orleans. The promo provides a clear sense of what she's been through, as well as her love story with Hai.
Laurel struggled so much and even faced trouble in finding her true self. The clip also showed her questioning herself where her baby is. She may have looked for him at some point, but she possibly gave up when she couldn't get the answer she's been seeking.
Randall will learn more about Laurel in This Is Us season 5 episode 6. He's going to meet Hai to find out how his biological mother lived her life. The good thing is that he's got the support of his family, with his wife, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), accompanying him.
Laurel's backstory has been teased several times during the early run of the current installment. In the previous episode, Randall went on a journey to Louisiana. He's about to meet Hal so that he'll understand more what really happened to his mother.
In next week's episode, he could find peace with his past. Hai seemingly knew that William Hill didn't lie or betray Randall. He believed that Laurel was dead, that's why he revealed it to his son. Clearly, there are a lot of unanswered questions that needed to be addressed.
