WARNING: This article may have some spoilers for the first installment of Batwoman. Read at your own risk.

Batwoman season 2 is introducing several new faces, in addition to the arrival of the titular character's latest version, Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie). New characters come into play, and most of them will become a huge threat in Gotham City, as well as its people.

Alice (Rachel Skarsten) has been one of the biggest adversaries throughout the first installment. While she's still going to be part of the story, someone new will show up and take the center stage in Batwoman season 2. Shivaani Ghai is set to play Safiyah, the latest thorn for the titular character.

Safiyah, who made a brief appearance in season 1, has certain ties with Alice, and this might be further explored later on. She is the fierce and protective ruler of a small community on the island of Coryana. She has a lot of enemies but also described as compassionate and charismatic.

Her people love her dearly and they'll do everything to protect her. Safiyah also notices everyone, especially those who already encountered Desert Rose. She'll be tied to a lot of huge stuff the next outing and will become one of the major Big Bad in Batwoman season 2.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ghai shared what viewers can expect from her character in the upcoming installment. She said that Safiyah isn't what viewers expected from the first season. She has a definite spot for Alice, and fans will learn more about their "deeper relationship."

Meanwhile, another villain is arriving in Batwoman season 2. Black Mask will show up at some point, and he's going to be an additional threat from the titular character. In a separate interview with the aforementioned outlet, executive producer Caroline Dries shared some details about the character.

Dries confirmed that the leader of the False Face Society, which is Black Mask, will be making an appearance later in the season. Only a few details were known about this latest villain at the moment. It's also yet to be seen who's going to play the role.

For now, the early run of the second installment will focus on the disappearance of Kate Kane (Ruby Rose). Ryan Wilder won't immediately wear the Batsuit as some people may doubt her ability. There's going to be a transition from the first to the second version.

Batwoman season 2 will be premiering on Sunday, Jan. 17, on The CW.
