Some iPhone users found themselves logged out of their Facebook accounts, which the social media giant attributed to a configuration issue.

Facebook revealed that a "configuration change" caused an issue that unexpectedly logged out some iPhone users. Apple iPhone users flooded forums with reports about the social media network requiring them to log back in Friday with two-factor authentication keys. Facebook later attributed the incident to a configuration issue, which they say is already fixed.

In a statement, a Facebook spokesperson stated that the configuration issue caused the social media network to log out iPhone users. "On January 22, a configuration change caused some people to be logged out of their Facebook accounts. We investigated the issue and fixed it for everyone earlier today. We're sorry for the inconvenience," the spokesperson stated in an email sent to various online media outlets.

A Mistake

Several users of the iOS app said that the issue started late Friday ET, with many of them reporting they received "sign-in" notifications from their Facebook apps even though they did not sign out from the social media network. After investigating, the social media giant said that a configuration issue unexpectedly logged out some iOS app users. The social media giant added that the "configuration change" that logged iPhone users out of their Facebook is a mistake.

While Facebook's configuration issue and the ensuing problem of users logging out of their accounts without their knowledge affected non-iPhone owners, online news media Engadget found that iOS users appear most affected by the issue. According to the news outlet, Facebook iOS users, who use two-factor authentication, found difficulties in logging back into their accounts. Although many of them were able to log in again, the authentication codes they needed took a long time to arrive in their mailboxes.

Some Cheers, But Mostly Jeers

Facebook's admission that logging out users without their knowledge was a mistake met some cheers, but mostly earned jeers from its users. Although several iPhone users applauded the engineers who fixed the configuration issue, users also said that even if Facebook went through great lengths of explaining its configuration change, it was to no avail to the users. Even after Facebook announced they already resolved the issue, some Facebook iOS app users still complain of difficulty in logging back in, particularly when using two-factor authentication, while others report the social media network still logs them out unexpectedly.

Aside from the company's statement about a "configuration change" that might have logged out iPhone users, Facebook did not offer any additional details on what really happened, and whether such configuration issue truly logs out users from their accounts. The social media giant announced that they resolved the "configuration change" issue at approximately 6AM ET on Saturday. Did you also experience the bizarre Facebook configuration issue?
