Doctor Who season 13 is going to introduce a new character once it premieres on BBC. It has been confirmed that comedian and actor John Bishop will be portraying the role of Dan. There are still a lot of mysteries surrounding his arrival, but he'll be an interesting addition to the Companions.
In a recent interview with Doctor Who Magazine, showrunner Chris Chibnall discussed the role of Bishop's character in Doctor Who season 13. He said that Dan is going to be the latest companion and he'll ring a "different flavor and different humor" in the sci-fi series.
The character was first introduced at the end of the New Year's special episode, titled "Revolution of the Daleks." BBC noted Dan will be embroiled in the adventures of The 13th Doctor and he'll immediately learn there's more to the Universes than he previously thought.
Chibnall also explained why he cast Bishop in Doctor Who season 13, noting that he's somebody he's been "keeping a beady eye on for years." The showrunner revealed that the actor still went on the audition process for the role, which he "engaged with humbly."
Previously, Chibnall announced that the new installment kicks off with a man named Dan. He said that they've kept this matter a secret "for a long, long time." The conversation with Bishop began even before the COVID-19 pandemic.
The showrunner added that Dan was built for Bishop and this latest character is going to be an interesting addition aboard the TARDIS. He will be different from other characters, including Tosin Cole's Ryan and Bradley Walsh's Graham -- who both departed in the series.
Meanwhile, previous speculations suggest that Doctor Who season 13 is going to be the final one for Jodie Whittaker. While BBC hasn't confirmed or denied the rumor, fans have been wondering if this will be the last for her character of The 13th Doctor.
According to British outlet The Mirror, Whittaker is leaving and the series is "gearing up for a regeneration." The publication further noted that the actress's departure is a "top secret," and for the coming months, the "arrival of the 14th Doctor will need to be filmed."
For now, it's yet to be seen whether this is true or not. It can be noted that the previous iterations of The Doctors were played by different actors for three seasons. For instance, Peter Capaldi portrayed The 12th Doctor from 2014-2017 -- prior to Whittaker's version.
As for the release date, nothing is officially confirmed as of this writing. But, Doctor Who season 13 is set for a 2021 premiere.
