The Walking Dead season 11 is finally in production after encountering a series of setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many were excited for the arrival of the post-apocalyptic horror, especially since it serves as the final installment.

Recently, the official Twitter account of the series confirmed that filming of The Walking Dead season 11 is underway. The behind-the-scene photo comes with a caption: "The first day of the last season of #TWD." Right now, however, the official release date remains uncertain.

The series is yet to release the six bonus episodes in season 10. The first one is dropping on Sunday, Feb. 28, on AMC. The stories here are different as they're more focused on personal storylines rather than featuring huge and bloody battles.

The Walking Dead season 11 is going to be different, as well. The final installment will, reportedly, contain a total of 24 episodes. While the release date is yet to be revealed, some suggest that it could premiere in either late 2021 or early 2022.

The series finale will likely cover most of the loose ends in the story. The fate of most characters has been in question since the beginning and it would be interesting to see where they ended up after all of these. And even if the main show is ending, the franchise itself remains.

When The Walking Dead season 11 comes to an end, certain characters within this world will be given a spotlight. For instance, there is a spin-off coming featuring Norman Reedus' Daryl and Melissa McBride's Carol. There's also Fear the Walking Dead and a movie that's all about Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).

Since this is the series finale, there are also speculations that some characters from the past will show up -- including Rick. He's a significant character since the beginning but left midway through season 9. Nothing is confirmed at the moment, but some think he could make one last appearance in the main series.

Meanwhile, executive producer Scott M. Gimple discussed why the flagship show is ending. In a past interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said that the decision comes down to AMC rather than himself or showrunner Angela Kang.

According to Gimple, "it's incredibly heavy" when he and Kang learned that The Walking Dead season 11 will be the final one for the post-apocalyptic horror. Although there are spin-offs coming in the future, the executive producer said it's hard to say goodbye since it's a "significant period of his career."
