Family and relationships have been the major key themes of This Is Us season 5. Fans already saw these played out to some characters, especially to The Big Three: Randall Pearson (Sterling K. Brown), Kate Pearson (Chrissy Metz), and Kevin Pearson (Justin Hartley).
However, there is still a big question in This Is Us season 5 -- particularly when it comes to their mother's, Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore), romantic relationship with Miguel Rivas (Jon Huertas). There are mysteries surrounding their backstory and how they ended up where they are right now.
While some of the events in Rebecca and Miguel's past have been touched, the romantic family drama hasn't entirely explored what the couples have been through before. Miguel is the stepfather of the Big Three and also the best friend of Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia), Rebecca's first husband.
It's clear that Rebecca and Miguel had a history with Jack, but this wasn't shown in the series. In addition, it wasn't featured how the Big Three accepted him as their mother's second husband and their new stepfather. This is something that will likely be addressed -- but not in This Is Us season 5.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-executive producer Vera Herbert discussed what lies ahead for Rebecca and Miguel's storyline. She noted that the backstory of the two will be tackled in the next season and they "have the room to explore it."
Fans have to wait for a while to see what Rebecca and Miguel went through before they got together. Herbert promised that their own storyline is "definitely coming" since it is something they talk about a lot. Perhaps, the pandemic is one of the reasons why this storyline won't be featured now.
This Is Us season 5 kicked off production late, which means that there might only be a few episodes this time around. Some of the storylines that have been originally planned in the fifth installment were cut short due to the real-life health crisis. The good thing is that fans will see them play out in the future.
Meanwhile, next week's episode is titled "The Ride" and it will pick up where "In The Room" left off. No further details have been released, but it might focus more on Kevin and Madison (Caitlin Thompson) welcoming their twins and Kate successfully adopting Hailey Rose.
