Tokyo Mew Mew New is based on the manga Tokyo Mew Mew by Reiko Yoshida and Mia Ikumi. It was confirmed that the brand new anime adaptation is coming, although it already debuted on the screen with 52 episodes in 2002. Now, the show comes back with a new take 20 years later.

Tokyo Mew Mew New has no official release date as of this writing, but it is slated for a 2022 premiere. the upcoming anime series marks the 20th anniversary of the manga and the 65th Anniversary of Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine. The latest adaptation features the new look of the classic heroines.

The latest poster was recently dropped featuring Ichigo Momomiya, who will be voiced by Yuki Tenma. Other cast members include Mirai Hinata as Mint Aizawa, Momoka Ishii as Zakuro Fujiwara, Ryoko Juni as Lettuce Midorikawa, and Rian Toda as Pudding Fong.

The staff behind the upcoming Tokyo Mew Mew New has been set, as well. Takahiro Natori serves as the director, while Yuka Yamada writes the script for the animated series. Toshiki Kameyama will be the sound director and Satoshi Ishino will be the character designer.

Meanwhile, the manga series was originally serialized in Kodansha's shōjo manga magazine Nakayoshi from September 2000 to February 2003. After that, a two-volume sequel was released titled Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode. It was serialized in Nakayoshi from February 2002 to January 2003.

In the sequel, a new Mew Mew, named Berry Shirayuki, was introduced. She became a temporary leader of the group when Ichigo went on a trip to England. Following its success, the manga was adapted into series, which runs from February 2002 to March 2003 on TV Aichi and TV Tokyo.

Aside from the manga and anime, two video games were also released: Game Boy Advance's puzzle adventure game Hamepane Tokyo Mew Mew, and PlayStation's role-playing video game Tōkyō Mew Mew - Enter the New Mew Mew! - Serve Everyone Together.

Now, Tokyo Mew Mew New will likely follow the premise of the manga series. It features five girls infused with the DNA of endangered animals, giving them special powers and the ability to transform into "Mew Mew." The group is led by Ichigo and they protect the earth from the aliens who want to reclaim it.

Prior to the official announcement of Tokyo Mew Mew New, a short 2-chapter sequel was released in 2020. Titled Tokyo Mew Mew 2020 Re-Turn, it featured all the five main characters with updated designs. In addition, the spin-off Tokyo Mew Mew Olé introduced a new team of male Mew Mews.
