The official plot synopsis of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City has been unveiled just recently. The upcoming survival horror movie is directed by Johannes Roberts and serves as a reboot of the Resident Evil film series by Paul W. S. Anderson, which was based on Capcom's video game of the same name.

Anderson's film series spanned six installments, with Milla Jovovich playing the lead role. While the movies grossed $1 billion at the box office, fans said that the story didn't follow the source materials. Now, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is bringing more horror rather than action-adventure.

The reboot has been in development back since 2017, with James Wan serving as executive producer. However, he let go of the project and worked on Mortal Kombat, instead. Later on, it was announced that Roberts will be the director and the writer of the upcoming film.

Only a few details were known about the reboot, though Roberts has been sharing some information about the project. In a past interview with Screen Rant, he confirmed that the movie is sticking with the video game's source materials -- particularly the survivor horror roots.

Roberts added that Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is "super scary" and will explore the Spencer Mansion's mysteries. Now, Sony Pictures and Screen Gems unveiled the official plot synopsis of the reboot, reiterating the return of the classic video game's terrifying look.

Raccoon City was once the home of the pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation. However, it ended up becoming a dying Midwestern town as the company's exodus left the place a wasteland. At the same time, a great evil brewing beneath has been unleashed.

Because of this, the entire town and the people were changed forever. Only a few survived and they need to work together to find the truth about the Umbrella Corporation. They must also make it through the night as evil forces are coming after them.

While the plot of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City didn't provide too much information on the characters, it did confirm that the villainous Umbrella Corporation will be the major adversary. The company is no longer successful, and the consequences of its misdeed play out hugely.

As for the cast members, Kaya Scodelario is set to play Claire Redfield, Lily Gao as Ada Wong, Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Hannah John-Kammen as Jill Valentine, and Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy.

Originally, the reboot was set for a September 3, 2021, release schedule but it later was delayed for more than a month. Now, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will be released in theaters on November 24, 2021, in the United States.
