A 28-year old Philippines man has died after being forced to do 300 squats for breaking the country's pandemic curfew.

Darren Manaog Peñaredondo left his home in General Trias, Cavite province, which is under lockdown because of COVID-19, to buy water last week, his family said, according to CNN Philippines.

He was apprehended by village watchmen for violating a 6 p.m. curfew and ordered to perform "pumping exercises," the report said.

Reichelyn Balce, Peñaredondo's girlfriend, said he had a heart condition. He could barely walk when he got home the following day, she said.

Balce said Penaredondo could crawl only and was in extreme pain. "His face turned violet and his heart stopped beating," Balce said. He started convulsing and having seizures.

Adrian Lucena, Peñaredondo's cousin, posted on social media that Peñaredondo "had a convulsion, but we were able to revive him at home." He was taken to hospital where he died hours later.

The Philippines has one of the highest COVID-19 rates in Asia. It has recorded more than 819,000 infections and 14,000 deaths, Johns Hopkins University data shows.

General Trias Mayor Antonio Ferrer said in a Facebook post the matter was being investigated.

The Philippines' approach to pandemic restrictions has sometimes been harsh. In April last year, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the police and military to shoot dead anyone who violated virus restrictions. "If they become unruly and they fight you and your lives are endangered, shoot them dead," Duterte said.
