Stranger Things season 4 has been announced in September 2019 but the official release date remains unknown until now. The sci-fi horror drama encountered a lot of delays because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It seems like fans need to wait for a little more as the series isn't arriving anytime soon.

Stranger Things season 4 release date has been in question shortly after the COVID-19 hits the globe. The cast and crew began filming in early 2020 in Lithuania, but production was shut down due to the pandemic. Recently, it was announced that work is set to resume sometime in August 2021.

Due to the production schedule, the release date might be moved again. Series star Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, also teased that the fourth installment is arriving in 2022. A clip released by Stranger Things Spoilers on Twitter featured the actor hinting at the possible return date of the series.

In a Fanmio video chat with fans, Wolfhard revealed that he's not expected Stranger Things season 4 to be released until sometime in 2022. This would coincide with the August 2021 filming date, as more works are needed to be done -- including post-production.

The series debuted on Netflix in 2016, with main cast members include Wolfhard, Milly Bobby Brown, Winona Ryder, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noach Schnapp. At the time, most of the stars were in their early teens and there might be some significant jump due to the long gap.

There are a lot of theories on how Stranger Things season 4 will move forward because of the filming gap. The characters were in their middle-school-aged the last time fans saw them, and since the cast members aged, that could mean the story will bring a significant time jump.

Apart from that, there are questions left in season 3 that needed to be solved, particularly how Jim Hopper (David Harbour) survived the fatal explosion. Initially, he was presumed dead but a teaser released in 2020 confirmed that he's alive and being held in a Russian prison.

In another interview, Wolfhard said that the upcoming installment will be the "darkest" one yet for the sci-fi horror drama. Since the characters are growing old, they're going to face massive threats and terrifying creatures along the way.

Meanwhile, Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson, previously told Entertainment Weekly that Stranger Things season 4 is stepping up and will have several changes. He revealed, in particular, that the theme would be "more mature" this time around.
