Death Note 2 is gaining the spotlight these past few weeks. As the public continues to wonder when it will arrive on Netflix, the buzz around the sequel to the live-action adaptation becomes more apparent.

Nearly four years have passed since the first film to the series dropped on the streaming platform. While many had high hopes toward the material, it seemingly failed to obtain positive remarks from the public, especially fans and followers.

Despite this, many people are looking forward to seeing the improvements on the sequel. Although details remain scarce, writer Greg Russo shared his thoughts about how he plans the upcoming film's course, according to Comic Book.

Speaking to We Got This Covered, he said that he is a "huge fan of the manga," adding that it is "one of the greatest mangas ever written." While he never played a part in the production of the first film, he said that he wanted to "go back to the source material" in creating Death Note 2.

Russo did not share any more details, though, about the upcoming film, except that it is currently in the works. But, he said that he hopes for more information to come out soon.

The writer, also, teased that the sequel will not be what most people are expecting. He, then, emphasized that he meant it "in a very enticing way."

Screen Rant reported that the first Netflix adaptation to the manga received criticisms and waves of backlash from the public. Aside from the allegations that the production "whitewashed" the material, many, reportedly, claimed that the film "drifted too far away from the anime and manga."

While it still borrowed several "plot elements" from the original material, the production changed many "story beats, characters, and motivations." This, then, led the public to argue that it had little to do with the manga "beyond sharing a name."

Despite the negative reviews and criticisms, Netflix announced a year later that Death Note 2 will happen. Fans have since waited for further details and updates regarding the sequel.

Netflix Life previously released a report, covering the potential release date, synopsis, and cast members of Death Note 2. As noted, however, the project heads, alongside the streaming giant, have yet to drop essential information about the sequel.

With Greg Russo's recent statements, though, it seemingly appears that he is still working on the script. Reports, later on, asserted that the public may likely obtain new details about the film in the next few months.
