The Walking Dead movie has been confirmed to be happening and it will focus more on the storyline of Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes. He's been one of the major characters in the post-apocalyptic horror drama before departing in the flagship series back in season 9.
After Lincoln's exit as Rick, it was announced that he would be coming back in The Walking Dead movie. The film will follow the journey of the character, particularly where was he all the time and what happened to him during his time away from other survivors.
Rick's fate has already been teased in the spin-off The Walking Dead: Beyond World, which likely sets up more stories for him in the movie. It was revealed that the helicopter that took him in season 9 belongs to a dangerous organization the Civic Republic Military or CRM.
However, it is still unknown where the CRM brought Rick after they lifted him in the helicopter. Fans may have an answer to that questions as filming of The Walking Dead movie is about to start. In an interview with SFX Magazine, Lincoln has something to say when it comes to this matter.
The actor is still in lockdown at the moment, but he teased that production may begin soon. Although he didn't provide an exact date, he said that all of them were excited to go back to work and they will likely start sometime in Spring 2021.
His statement coincides with what he said earlier this year, noting that they're eyeing to film The Walking Dead movie in spring. The movie has already been delayed for almost two due to a lot of factors, particularly because of the COVID-19 pandemic,
Lincoln also revealed that he signed on more than one film, though the proposed trilogy is still being planned. He explained that they need to make the first movie "absolutely right" to bring more stories in the future. In addition to the pandemic, this is also one of the reasons why the film took long.
Meanwhile, The Walking Dead season 11 will be the final one for the flagship show and there are uncertainties surrounding it. Some have been wondering whether or not Rick is coming back for one last time to join the remaining Survivors.
Nothing is confirmed as of this writing, but Lincoln mentioned in the interview that, "never say never." The show's final run is setting up more stories and there could be unexpected twists and turns. A reunion for all of the characters might be a proper conclusion for the main series.
The Walking Dead movie is expected to be released in late 2022 or early 2023.
