"Fruits Basket" has now come to an end, but its legacy will continue in the new upcoming spinoff. A trailer to honor the series finale has officially announced a new story based on the anime is coming.
According to Comicbook, "Fruits Basket" will have a side series that will tell the story of Tohru's parents. Titled "The Story of Kyoko and Katsuya," it may go live, starting in 2022.
The franchise has yet to reveal its format, so it may come in a movie, show or OVA. Nothing is known about its storyline yet, though there are theories that it may have something to do with how the pair meets and comes together.
The anime's fans probably know the story of Kyoko and Katsuya. They have a lovely but depressing history that is worth telling.
Her own parents have disowned Kyoko after a heated discussion that gives Katsuya the chance to propose. They have a happy marriage until everything falls apart after Tohru was born.
Katsuya eventually dies when Tohru was still a child and her dad follows soon after. From here, their story has been in "Fruits Basket" and will continue in the new spinoff.
In addition to the new spinoff, Anime News Network revealed there would be a new stage play also coming in 2022. The six-minute video to commemorate the series' final episode featured the cast's signed messages.
The original manga creator Takaya also issues her own message after the success of the series. Funimation first streamed the debut episode of "Fruits Basket the Final" with an English dub on March 19 - two weeks before it aired in Japan on April 5.
Funimation, along with Crunchyroll, also streams the anime as it starts airing in Japan. On the other hand, the anime's second season began airing in the said country in April 2020 and continued until the summer with 25 episodes.
Funimation also streamed the second season with an English dub, though its English simuldub production was put to a stop in March 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Anyhow, Crunchyroll continued its streaming as it aired.
The anime's two seasons adapted Takaya's famed "Fruits Basket" manga series. Its staff and crew were entirely Japanese people to heed the mangaka's request.
The anime covered the entire manga story and now fans had officially said goodbye to Tohru, Shigure, Kyo and the rest of the cast as it came to an end.
The new "Fruits Basket" spinoff will release in 2022.
