The likelihood of an extended lockdown in Sydney loomed Monday as authorities reported another record daily increase in Covid-19 infections, fueled by the highly contagious Delta variant.

New South Wales health officials reported 112 new local cases, almost all in Sydney, despite Australia's largest city entering its third week of lockdown. 

In Malaysia, the number of infections dropped slightly to 8,574 Monday, after several days with figures surpassing the 9,000 mark, health officials said.

Malaysia reported 91 deaths in a 24-hour period, bringing the country's death toll to 6,158. Authorities reported 5,194 recoveries, which means 742,297 have recovered from the virus nationwide.

The still has 961 patients in intensive care units, with 455 requiring ventilation support.

In Singapore, officials reported eight new local virus transmissions as of noon Monday, including three unlinked cases.

The five cases linked to previous infections have already been placed in quarantine, the Ministry of Health said. 

This is the highest number of local infections since June 27, when 12 cases were reported.

In Indonesia, hospitals are swamped, with growing numbers of the ill dying in isolation at home or while waiting to receive emergency care, The Associated Press said.

Indonesia is running out of oxygen as it endures a crippling wave of new infections and as the government seeks emergency supplies from other countries, including China and Singapore.

"We recognize the difficult situation Indonesia currently finds itself in with a surge of cases," AP quoted White House press secretary Jen Psaki as saying.

Over in the Philippines, the county has administered some 13 million vaccine doses, the Department of Health said Monday, more than four months since the government launched its vaccination campaign.

The Philippines expects to receive July 19 its first vaccine batch from Johnson & Johnson, donated by the United States through vaccine-sharing Covax Facility, officials said.

In India, local health authorities in the southern India state of Kerala said 14 cases of the Zika virus have been detected in the state Saturday.

Zika virus is mostly spread by mosquitoes. It can also be sexually transmitted, according to experts.

In Hong Kong, tens of thousands of the city's airport personnel have been ordered to undergo screening after authorities confirmed a second infection, also likely to involve the Delta variant, among workers in the space of around three weeks.

Meanwhile, in China, pandemic controls in parts of the country's southwestern province of Yunnan were tightened as the region scrambled to contain an outbreak on the border with Myanmar.

"We will strictly crack down on illegal entry and severely punish illegal entrants and those who organize, assist and offer accommodation," Ruili Communist Party chief Zhai Yulong said in quotes by South China Morning Post.

The infections were detected during mass testing as the city of Ruili experienced its fourth virus flare-up since the pandemic broke out, this time in the wake of fears over the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant.

Worldwide, there are currently 187 million cases of the virus, with 4.03 million deaths.
