Google has confirmed that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will come with an update that buyers will need to have the best experience out of the box.

In a new forum post, Google announced that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will receive a day-one update as soon as they are unboxed. These upgrades ensure that all of the Pixel's claimed features, such as the Magic Eraser, function properly.

According to Google, the rollout for these updates may take a few days to complete, so if your phone arrives before October 28, you may not be able to download the update right away.

To see if you're on the latest software, Google advises you to go to Settings > System > System Update > Check for Update, or on the Settings > About page, check for the following build numbers.

  • SD1A.210817.036

  • SD1A.210817.036.A8 (Verizon customers)

These are the same version numbers that reviewers have used on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro throughout several testings. While Google does not provide a complete changelog, we do know that it is included in the November security patch.

The day-one update will download and install in the background once you finish your device setup, and Google estimates that it will take between 25 and 50 minutes.

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are set to ship on Oct. 28, so you won't have to wait long to get your hands on the update.

Google's latest flagship phones are powered by the company's Tensor chip, but it has a higher-resolution screen, a higher-resolution selfie camera, a 48MP telephoto camera, and a larger battery. UWB is also supported on the Pro model.

The Google Pixel 6 features a textured aluminum frame and is available for pre-order in three colors - Sorta Seafoam, Kinda Coral, and Stormy Black - as well as memory tiers of 8/128GB and 8/256GB, starting at $599.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro features a polished metal frame and is available in three color options: Cloudy White, Sorta Sunny, and Stormy Black, as well as two memory options: 12/128GB, 12/256GB, and even a 12/512GB. The starting price is $899.
