Rumors abound that Google is preparing to introduce its next-generation 'A' series affordable Pixel in the form of the Pixel 6a.

Google's low-cost Pixel 6a will be unveiled in May, according to leaker Max Jambor. That's when Google usually holds its annual developer's conference, which will most likely take place this year, either virtually or in person. Google has yet to make an official statement.

The rumor mill is already churning about the 6a, which is likely to sport a slightly smaller 6.2-inch display than the current Pixel 5a. The screen's refresh rate is limited to 60Hz rather than the previously anticipated 120Hz.

The decreased refresh rate, however, might be better for battery life. When combined with the Pixel 6a's estimated 4,800 mAh battery, the phone would be able to compete with more entry-level phones from companies like Motorola, which tend to sacrifice important features like processing power in favor of longer battery life.

Google has been releasing both flagship and mid-range Pixel phones for the past number of years. However, due to numerous supply chain challenges, the cheap 'A' range has frequently arrived later than expected.

Except for the fact that it's said to include Google's own Tensor processor, not much else is known about the Pixel 6a. This was Google's new proprietary platform, which debuted in the Pixel 6 in 2021.

It was Google's first departure from Qualcomm's Snapdragon series, and given the investment, it's unlikely that Google will return to utilizing Snapdragon very soon.

The Tensor chip would also aid in the implementation of camera smarts, which is yet another reason why many prefer the A-series over other mid-range Android handsets. The Pixel 6a has a 12.2-megapixel primary camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. Expect the smartphone's design to be similar to that of its premium brothers, as that angular style, as well as the multiple camera array on the backside, is making its way to Google's affordable lineup.

The Pixel 6a is rumored to have the same basic design as its more costly siblings, with a punch-hole screen on the front and a camera visor configuration on the back. The phone is expected to have a 6.2-inch OLED display with dimensions of 152.2 x 71.8 x 8.7mm.

The 'A' series has distinguished itself in previous years by reducing the number of cameras and lowering the build quality, replacing metal and glass with a simple plastic design. The same can be expected for the 2022 variation.
