Verizon is increasing the minimum wage to $20 per hour for its new employees in Customer Service and the same goes for existing Retail and Inside Sales employees to recognize their diligence and devotion.

Workers in any of these departments who are still paid less than $20 per hour will also be immediately upgraded to this new rate. While for assistant managers who work on Sundays, and holidays, and are bilingual, the company has also implemented premium pay differentials.

"These improvements are an outcome of employee feedback and will assist us to continue being a desirable company in this competitive market," said Krista Bourne, Verizon Consumer Group's Chief Operating Officer.

In addition to the increased starting pay, Verizon is also providing a sign-on incentive for retail specialist and assistant manager opportunities in several businesses across the country.

"I'm convinced that these enhancements will assist the company in attracting and retaining the greatest staff, as well as allowing us to keep improving our customer service," Bourne added.

The adjustment in starting wage follows earlier this month's notification of further salary and incentive upgrades for its employees in the retail department. The objective is to guarantee that company goals are met while also providing excellent customer service.

Verizon Communications Inc. has become the latest wireless provider to increase its base salary to $20 per hour, indicating a tightening labor industry and drive-by labor campaigners to unionize employees of retail and customer service.

Walmart, Walgreen Boots Alliance Inc., and Chipotle Mexican Grill, all of which are based in the United States, have recently increased hourly salaries to encourage more individuals to work.

T-Mobile US Inc., a mobile phone rival, raised its base salary to $20 per hour from $15 late last year as a result of a tough recruitment situation during the global viral outbreak. According to John Byrne, an analyst with GlobalData, AT&T Inc. hasn't made any major pay raises but may do so soon.

Byrne emphasized that the Verizon news, along with T-Mobile's announcement a few months ago, makes it certain that AT&T will conform next. However, AT&T refused to respond on starting pay but claimed that its customer support representatives earn an average of $26 per hour in total compensation.

At corporations ranging from Amazon.com Inc. to Starbucks Corp., the burden of having fewer job applicants has pushed more leverage to potential employees and encouraged more unionizing campaigns in the country.
