Chinese President Xi Jinping wished U.S. President Joe Biden a speedy recovery from the COVID-19, as the two of the most powerful leaders in the world prepare to talk over the phone to ease tensions between the two large economies.

China Central Television reported Xi sent he goodwill message to Biden Friday, saying that he hopes the American state leader will recover soon. Biden, who tested positive for COVID-19 Thursday, had mild symptoms and would work in isolation, the White House said.

Xi and Biden are set to speak one-on-one within the next week for the first time since March. At a Maryland air base, Biden told the media Wednesday he would be talking to President Xi within the next 10 days, but did not specify reasons or topics for a call.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre revealed Biden, who is "fully vaccinated and twice boosted," is taking antiviral Paxlovid for the infection. "Consistent with CDC guidelines, he will isolate at the White House and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time," she penned in a statement.

For starters, the relations between China and the U.S. -- already tense over trade tariffs, human rights issues and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia - have been strained furthered by reports that U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is set to visit Taiwan in August.

Beijing considers the democratically ruled island its territory and opposes such visits as a violation of diplomatic agreements. A White House official earlier stated that Xi and Biden's imminent conversation would cover a range of bilateral, regional and global issues.

The official, as per Bloomberg, asked not to be identified because the called had not been scheduled yet. It also remains unclear how Biden's COVID-19 infection would affect the conversation, which would always have been conducted virtually.

Xi has reportedly not met Biden in person since the U.S. leader took office, as China's strict COVID-19 curbs have prevented him from leaving the country since January 2020. However, the zero-tolerance approach of COVID-19 in China is in contrast to the U.S., which chose to live with the fatal virus, opening borders and eradicating mask mandates.

To recall, the "Zero-COVID" policy of China triggered near-total quarantines earlier this year across several major cities in an effort to contain the spread of the Omicron variant. Now, China has reported its first domestic cases of the highly contagious BA.5 subvariant, while overall cases of COVID-19 are rising at their fastest pace in nearly two months.

Meanwhile, CNBC claimed Xi and Biden last spoke in March and discussed mostly about Russia's invasion of Ukraine. China has refused to call the attack an invasion.
