The Duchess emphasized the significance of regular screenings and underlined her resolve to transform her lifestyle following the diagnosis.
Fergie divulged on the podcast, aired on Monday, that she was detected with an initial stage of the disease during a routine mammogram, necessitating a single mastectomy. She voiced the need for public discourse around her diagnosis, considering it a "real gift" or a reminder to prioritize her health and well-being.
"I am going public with my condition because I want every listener of this podcast to prioritize their health checks and screenings. I perceive this as an invaluable opportunity to reassess and amend my life," said the Duchess. She further added, "This mandatory surgery gives me no room for further delay or excuse. I have to go through this surgery and emerge stronger and healthier. Having no option, at times, is the most beneficial."
As a patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust, the 63-year-old Duchess stressed her shift in focus from taking care of others to taking her health seriously. Revealing her post-surgery plans, she expressed her intent to become "super fit, super strong." Her love for playful exploration and adventure was palpable when she mentioned the prospect of climbing the "extraordinary mountains" of Austria, or visiting Scotland or Wales.
She declared, "My objective now is to get super fit, super healthy, and super strong. It's crucial that we emphasize the necessity of regular screenings, not only for breast cancer but for overall health checks."
The Duchess's spokesperson confirmed her single mastectomy in a statement to The Independent, stating, "Sarah, Duchess of York was recently diagnosed with an early stage of breast cancer, detected during a routine mammogram screening. A surgery was advised, which has been carried out successfully."
Expressing gratitude for the medical personnel, the statement highlighted the Duchess's appreciation for the mammogram staff who discovered her illness, despite her being "otherwise symptom-free." She stressed that her situation underscores the criticality of regular screening.
The Duchess reportedly underwent surgery on Sunday, June 25, at the King Edward VII Hospital, a private clinic in central London known for treating Queen Elizabeth II and other prominent royals. She is currently recuperating at her Windsor residence, likely at Royal Lodge, with her family, including her ex-husband, Prince Andrew.
