For K-pop idols, the 7-year mark often serves as a significant turning point. As the standard contract duration is 7 years, many face the crossroads of renewing their contracts once this period ends.

Historically, many idol groups have disbanded around their 7th anniversary, leading to terms like the "7-year jinx" or "devil's 7th year". However, recently, numerous groups have successfully renewed their contracts in their entirety. Even if they move to different agencies, many groups have chosen to stay together, extending the lifespan of idol groups.

Given this, let's examine how idols who debuted in 2016 and are celebrating their 7th anniversary this year have navigated the 'devil's 7th year'.

ASTRO, who debuted in February 2016, underwent a team restructuring with member Rocky's departure. Last December, Fantagio, their agency, announced the renewal of contracts with all members except Rocky. MJ, who is currently serving in the military, will discuss his contract upon discharge. Ultimately, Rocky left the group in March and terminated his contract with Fantagio. Currently, ASTRO members are focusing on individual activities.

Cosmic Girls, also debuting in February 2016, announced a fresh start as an 8-member group after Luda and Dawon ended their contracts with Starship Entertainment. Although a full group renewal didn't materialize, the restructured Cosmic Girls are expected to continue their activities.

MOMOLAND, who debuted in 2016 with the mini-album 'Welcome to MOMOLAND' and gained love with hits like 'Bboom Bboom', 'BAAM', and 'Thumbs Up', disbanded in January after ending their contract with MLD Entertainment.

The members stated, "After much contemplation, the six of us decided to take a step towards our individual dreams. Although we're parting ways, we'll always be one team and will always be with our beloved fans, Merries, as MOMOLAND."

VICTON also effectively disbanded in April after Choi Byungchan, Do Hanse, and Jung Subin moved agencies post their contract termination with IST Entertainment. Han Seungwoo, Kang Seungsik, and Lim Sejun, whose contract durations were adjusted due to military service, remained with the agency and embarked on individual activities.

SF9 restructured as an 8-member group after Rowoon announced his departure. Although all members renewed their contracts with FNC, Rowoon decided to focus on individual activities, including acting. In a handwritten letter, Rowoon shared, "I want to take on new challenges as I turn 27. I've been struggling with how to convey this, but I want to muster the courage to embark on a new journey."

PENTAGON saw 5 of its 9 members leave Cube Entertainment. Yeo One, Yan An, Yuto, Kino, and Wooseok ended their contracts, leading to concerns about the group's potential disbandment. However, the members clarified that it wasn't a departure or disbandment.

BLACKPINK, also marking their 7th year, is still in discussions regarding their contract renewal. Since last year, various rumors have circulated about their contract renewal with YG Entertainment. From ending exclusive contracts to establishing individual agencies, various reports have emerged. However, YG maintains, "Nothing has been confirmed regarding BLACKPINK's contract renewal and future activities," drawing significant attention from fans.
