In a strategic move to enhance its Prime loyalty program, Amazon has introduced a health care advantage for its members by offering access to One Medical services at a discounted rate. Prime members now have the option to subscribe to One Medical for just $9 a month or $99 annually, a significant markdown from the standard $199 yearly fee.

This integration of One Medical into Amazon's subscription service follows the tech giant's acquisition of the primary health-care provider for approximately $3.9 billion. One Medical is known for its network of upscale primary-care practices situated mainly in urban centers across the United States. The service provides virtual and in-person health care, touted for its convenience and accessibility.

Neil Lindsay, Amazon Health's senior vice president, emphasized the goal behind this initiative: "When it is easier for people to get the care they need, they engage more in their health and realize better health outcomes." He affirmed that delivering One Medical's outstanding health care experience to Prime members underscores Amazon's commitment to facilitating a healthier, more engaged customer base.

Prime members who opt into this new health benefit can enjoy unlimited 24/7 virtual care, encompassing video consultations and a 'Treat Me Now' feature through the One Medical app for common health concerns. Members also have the flexibility to schedule same-day or next-day appointments at One Medical's numerous offices without incurring additional costs for virtual care services.

Further deepening the appeal, Amazon extends these savings to family members, allowing Prime subscribers to add up to five additional One Medical memberships at just $6 per person per month.

Amazon has been diversifying its Prime benefits, which began in 2005 primarily with free two-day shipping. Over the years, the membership has expanded to include a wide array of services from exclusive streaming content to special savings events like Prime Day. As of April 2021, the program boasts over 200 million subscribers worldwide.

The company's foray into the health sector includes acquiring the online pharmacy PillPack in 2018 and recently ramping up its virtual health clinic services. However, not all endeavors have been successful; Amazon Care, a telehealth service, was phased out in 2022 as part of cost-cutting measures, and Haven, a joint health care venture, dissolved in 2021.

With the One Medical benefit, Amazon is banking on strengthening customer loyalty and expanding its footprint in the health care arena. The initiative marks a significant step in Amazon's quest to become a more integral part of its customers' lives, going beyond retail and entertainment to include health and wellness.
