Apple Inc. may face delays in launching its first foldable device, originally anticipated for 2025, according to new insights from Haitong Securities analyst Jeff Pu. The analyst, in a note to investors, highlighted that the expected release of Apple's foldable iPad could be pushed to 2026 due to concerns over display durability.
Jeff Pu, who has been closely monitoring Apple's product roadmap, initially reported in May that Apple was gearing up for mass production of its first foldable devices in 2025 and 2026. He mentioned that the foldable devices, potentially including a large-screen iPad or MacBook, would precede a higher-volume foldable iPhone expected by late 2026.
However, Pu's latest insights indicate a shift in the timeline. "Apple will join the foldable market in the second quarter of 2026 due to display durability issues," Pu explained. This delay highlights the challenges Apple faces in perfecting the durability and functionality of foldable displays, a crucial aspect of ensuring these devices meet the company's high standards.
Beyond the foldable devices, Pu has high expectations for Apple's product lineup, particularly the 2025 cycle. He anticipates that the iPhone 17 will drive significant results for the company, thanks to new features, a redesign, and enhanced capabilities. According to Pu, the iPhone 17 will introduce Apple Intelligence features, an upgraded design, increased memory, and an Always-On Display with ProMotion.
This marks the first time reports have surfaced about a potential redesign for the iPhone 17. While Apple is not expected to abandon its Dynamic Island design or introduce under-panel Face ID technology until the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 17 is poised to set new standards in smartphone technology.
Adding to the anticipation is the rumored iPhone 17 Slim, which Pu believes could significantly impact sales. Expected to be priced around $1,299, the iPhone 17 Slim will likely be the most expensive base model iPhone to date, featuring an ultra-thin form factor, the A19 chip, 8 GB of RAM, and dual main cameras. Despite its high price point, it may be underpowered compared to the iPhone 17 Pro, sparking debates about its value proposition.
In the foldable devices category, Pu expects Apple to introduce both a foldable iPad and a foldable iPhone in the latter half of 2026. The foldable iPad is anticipated to feature a 20.3-inch display when unfolded, offering a substantial screen real estate for users. For the foldable iPhone, rumors suggest a design similar to Samsung's Z Flip, with efforts to eliminate the display crease for a smoother user experience.
