General Motors (GM) has issued a recall for over 132,000 Chevrolet and GMC trucks from its 2024 lineup due to a potential safety hazard involving power-unlatching tailgates. The issue, which could cause tailgates to open unexpectedly while the vehicle is stationary, raises concerns about the risk of cargo loss and potential accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall affects specific models of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty (2500 and 3500 series) and the GMC Sierra Heavy Duty (2500 and 3500 series). All impacted vehicles are equipped with power-unlatching tailgates and were manufactured between August 1, 2023, and March 8, 2024.

The problem stems from the possibility of water seeping into the tailgate mechanism and short-circuiting the electronic gate-release switch. The NHTSA stated it could result in the tailgate unlatching while the truck is in park, leading to the loss of cargo and an increased risk of accidents.

Between September 2023 and September 2024, GM received 237 complaints about tailgates opening unexpectedly. "These complaints are likely attributable to the tailgate releasing while in Park before beginning a drive, as the control logic in the body control module (BCM) would prevent release of the tailgate latch when the vehicle is in gear-even if the BCM receives a release signal from the exterior touchpad switch," the NHTSA added.

Although there have been no reported injuries or crashes related to the malfunction, GM is urging owners to take precautions. Until repairs are made, owners are advised to ensure their tailgate is securely closed and latched before driving.

The company has outlined a plan to address the issue at no cost to owners. Dealerships will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies to prevent water intrusion. Letters notifying affected owners will be mailed on January 13, 2025.

GM has expanded this recall as part of its earlier action under NHTSA Recall 24V-060. The automaker encourages customers to contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782 for additional details.
