As wildfires ravage Los Angeles County, claiming at least 24 lives and leaving thousands homeless, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have drawn both praise and criticism for their involvement in relief efforts. The couple, known for their philanthropic initiatives, was labeled "disaster tourists" by actress Justine Bateman, who took to social media to criticize their actions.
Posting on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Bateman blasted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for what she called a "repulsive photo op." She wrote, "What a repulsive 'photo op' they achieved. They are 'touring the damage'? Are they politicians now?" Bateman went on to accuse the couple of being "ambulance chasers," adding, "They don't live here; they are tourists. Disaster Tourists. #PalisadesFire."
The criticism followed Harry and Markle's visit to the Pasadena Convention Center on Friday, where they met with first responders and residents affected by the fires. Video footage shared online showed the couple engaging with evacuees and distributing supplies, while Mayor Victor M. Gordo of Pasadena commended their efforts.
"It's great people, great personalities, and great heart for them to come out here and meet with the first responders, meet with the people who were affected," Gordo said. He recounted a moment when Harry fetched a donut for a victim, who reportedly told him, "If you ever run for anything, I'll vote for you," unaware of his royal status.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reside in Montecito, approximately 90 miles from Los Angeles. Their home is situated in a high-risk fire zone, but the couple remains safe. According to a spokesperson, they have opened their home to friends impacted by the disaster and donated supplies, clothing, and children's items through their Archewell Foundation.
In addition to their relief efforts, Markle postponed the release of her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, originally scheduled to premiere this week. The decision, according to sources close to the couple, was made to prioritize aiding wildfire victims.
Despite their contributions, Bateman's comments have sparked a heated debate online, with some echoing her sentiments and others defending the royal couple.
Harry and Markle are not the only celebrities stepping up amid the crisis. Stars like Jennifer Garner and Leighton Meester have also been seen volunteering. Meester and actor Miles Teller are among those who have reportedly lost their homes in the fires.
The wildfires, fueled by fierce Santa Ana winds and months of drought, have devastated Los Angeles County. As of Monday, more than 16 people remain missing, and officials warn that the death toll could rise. Thousands remain under evacuation orders, with emergency shelters housing displaced residents.
Bateman's criticism extended beyond the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. In a recent interview on Jesse Watters Primetime, the Family Ties star called for Los Angeles officials to be held accountable for what she described as inadequate planning and response to the crisis.
Prince Harry and Meghan's representatives have yet to comment on Bateman's accusations.
