Brad Pitt downplayed the end of his nearly decade-long divorce battle with Angelina Jolie, describing it as a legal technicality rather than a major life event. "No, I don't think it was that major of a thing. Just something coming to fruition. Legally," Pitt said in an interview published Wednesday by GQ, marking his first public remarks since the finalization of the divorce in December 2024.
Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 following a private jet incident in which she alleged Pitt was abusive toward her and their children. Pitt denied the allegations and was not charged following an FBI investigation. The couple, declared legally single in 2019, officially reached a divorce settlement eight years after the initial filing.
James Simon, Jolie's attorney, said in a statement, "More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt... Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over."
Pitt's comments come as he promotes his upcoming racing film F1, scheduled for release June 27. He and girlfriend Ines de Ramon, 32, made their first public appearance as a couple at the 2024 British Grand Prix. Pitt dismissed speculation about the timing of their appearance. "No, dude, it's not that calculated," he told GQ. "Life just evolves. Relationships evolve."
The couple began dating in 2022, while Pitt remained entangled in legal disputes with Jolie. In one such dispute, Pitt sued Jolie in 2022 after she sold her share of their jointly owned French winery, Château Miraval. Jolie's team stated in court documents that she had not acted out of malice and the sale was unrelated to any custody ruling.
Pitt also addressed his long-standing struggle with media scrutiny. "It's been in the news for 30 years, bro," he told GQ, referring to his personal life. "It's always been this kind of nagging time suck or waste of time, if you let it be that."
The former couple shares six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne. They met during the filming of Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2004, while Pitt was still married to actress Jennifer Aniston. They married in 2014 at Château Miraval.
