Meghan Markle's name is once again being floated in political circles - though the Duchess of Sussex herself insists she has no plans to run for office. Princess Diana's former butler, Paul Burrell, has predicted that Markle's next big move could be into politics, even suggesting she might one day seek to become governor of California.
In remarks reported by RadarOnline.com, Burrell said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's marriage faces "a fault line down the middle of it" due to their different ambitions and lifestyles. "I think the two cultures which came together in the marriage of Harry and Meghan, there is a fault line down the middle of it, and I feel that will crack one day," Burrell said.
He described Prince Harry as restless in Montecito, where the couple relocated after stepping down from royal duties in 2020. "He is sat in Montecito, twiddling his thumbs, thinking: 'What do I do next? What is my role? Where is my work?'" Burrell said. He added that Meghan "won't be happy until she becomes a billionaire" and that "her next step is a billionaire because she's got millions so why not step up to a billionaire?"
The former royal aide speculated that Meghan's ambitions could soon take her beyond the entertainment industry. "Why not become governor of California?" Burrell asked, a suggestion likely to raise eyebrows both in Britain and the U.S.
But Meghan has repeatedly denied harboring political ambitions. During an appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show, she was asked directly whether she would ever run for office. "No," she replied firmly. When pressed further, she repeated, "Never. Oh, God. I mean, you could say never, say never. No, I'm not interested in that. No."
Markle has been vocal about civic engagement, becoming the first modern British royal to vote in a U.S. presidential election in 2020. "I know what it's like to have a voice, and also what it's like to feel voiceless," she told Marie Claire at the time, explaining why she saw voting as a duty.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry is back in the U.K. for a four-day trip that included a meeting with King Charles - the first in 19 months. Meghan stayed in California, and reports have suggested she is wary of any potential private meeting between Harry and Kate Middleton. "Seeing Kate and Harry together again - it's Meghan's idea of a nightmare," a source told RadarOnline.com, describing Meghan as "protective" of the narrative surrounding the Sussexes.
