Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were honored as Humanitarians of the Year at the Project Healthy Minds Gala in New York City on Thursday night, marking a high-profile return to the spotlight for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as they renewed their public push for mental health awareness.
The couple arrived hand in hand at the Tribeca event, where they were recognized for their work through The Archewell Foundation Parents' Network, which connects families advocating for a safer online environment for children. "Knowledge is power, and community is strength," Harry said during the ceremony. "Expanding the parents' movement and supporting them throughout is how real change happens."
Meghan echoed his message, urging collaboration in tackling the dangers of social media. "We know that when parents come together, when communities unite, waves are made," she said. "We've seen it happen. We're watching it grow. And with your support, we'll continue building a safer digital world for all our children."
Their remarks followed a week of appearances by Harry tied to World Mental Health Day, including his participation in an Oct. 8 Movember panel discussing "The Real Face of Men's Health." Speaking about his own experiences, the Duke highlighted the emotional struggles men face and the stigma that often prevents them from seeking help. "The same struggles keep coming up, which tells me that the weight they carry isn't uncommon," he said. "The biggest barrier is the belief that no one will understand. Loneliness convinces you you're the only one, which is rarely true."
He also addressed the so-called "male loneliness epidemic," noting that while awareness has grown, "access to therapy is still a massive issue." Citing statistics, experts have warned that men are less likely than women to seek emotional support despite comparable rates of loneliness.
At the gala, Harry and Meghan's 10-minute acceptance speech touched on their concerns about social media's effects on children. "Our children, Archie and Lili, are 6 and 4 - luckily still too young for social media, but we know that day is coming," Harry said. "Like so many parents, we think constantly about how to embrace technology's benefits while safeguarding against its dangers. That hopeful intention of separation is rapidly becoming impossible."
The Duchess, described at the event as "a mother, wife, entrepreneur, and philanthropist," spoke passionately about how the couple's advocacy stems from their experience as parents. Their foundation has been developing partnerships with organizations working to reduce online harm and improve digital literacy among families.
