A little-known breakup in 2007 between Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales came close to altering the course of Britain's modern monarchy, according to new accounts from royal biographer Robert Jobson.
At the center of the episode was a brief but decisive phone call that ended a years-long relationship many assumed was headed toward marriage. The absence of that commitment proved devastating. Jobson describes Catherine as "distraught," a reaction echoed by friends who said she withdrew almost entirely from public view. Her mother, Carole Middleton, soon took her to Dublin, an unplanned retreat that those close to the family viewed as an emotional intervention.
