Gregory Bovino, the U.S. Border Patrol official closely associated with President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement crackdown, plans to retire at the end of the month, according to two Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials who spoke to NBC News.

Bovino had served as CBP commander at large, a position that placed him directly within the leadership team overseeing the administration's immigration operations. In January, he was removed from that role and reassigned as Border Patrol sector chief in El Centro, California, NBC News reported.

His retirement comes as Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem prepares to leave office at the end of the month. While serving as commander, Bovino reported directly to Noem and her senior adviser Corey Lewandowski.

Officials noted that Bovino was already eligible for retirement and was one year away from the agency's mandatory retirement age of 57.
