Queen Camilla is facing renewed scrutiny after a jewelry change during a recent U.S. visit with Donald Trump and Melania Trump triggered online speculation about a possible diplomatic slight between the British royal household and the Trump family.
The controversy centers on a reportedly $40,700 Tiffany & Co. diamond-and-ruby brooch that Melania Trump gifted Camilla during King King Charles III and Camilla's four-day visit to Washington. Cameras captured Camilla wearing the brooch during farewell moments with the Trumps at the White House, only for the jewel to disappear hours later during the royal couple's subsequent appearance at Arlington National Cemetery.
In its place was a historic Cartier brooch featuring both the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes - a symbolic Anglo-American piece previously worn by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The switch might ordinarily have passed unnoticed in royal circles, where clothing and jewelry changes between engagements are routine and often tied to protocol, venue or symbolism. Yet the timing of the change, immediately after the Trumps' departure, fueled claims online that Camilla had quietly sidelined Melania's gift.
The state visit itself had been carefully choreographed to emphasize warmth between the British monarchy and Trump's White House. Gifts exchanged during the visit carried deliberate symbolic value.
According to reports surrounding the visit:
- Melania Trump presented Camilla with a vintage Tiffany & Co. brooch featuring a floral diamond design surrounded by rubies.
- Camilla reportedly gifted Melania an Anya Hindmarch handbag and a silver-and-enamel bowl created by artist Cara Murphy.
- King Charles gave Trump the bell from the World War II submarine HMS Trump.
The Cartier brooch Camilla later wore carries its own diplomatic history. The piece was gifted to Queen Elizabeth II in 1957 by former New York Mayor Robert F. Wagner Jr. and has long been associated with Anglo-American relations. Royal historians note it is often selected during occasions emphasizing U.S.-UK unity or shared military remembrance.
That context has done little to calm speculation online, particularly because Camilla has not publicly worn Melania's Tiffany gift again since the White House events concluded.
The discussion widened further after astrologer Tracy Higgs weighed in publicly on the perceived tension, offering an interpretation to the Irish Star that framed the jewelry change through personality dynamics rather than royal protocol.
"Astrologically, Melania Trump and Queen Camilla are actually more compatible than many people might expect," Higgs said, noting that Melania is a Taurus while Camilla is a Cancer.
Higgs argued that both women share traits tied to "loyalty, privacy, and stability over theatrics or attention-seeking," though she also suggested subtle tensions could exist beneath their composed public appearances.
"When it comes to reports of Camilla apparently putting aside or 'ditching' Melania's gift, Taurus personalities do tend to notice gestures and manners deeply - even if they never openly react to them," Higgs said.
She added that Melania "may well have seen it as lacking warmth or appreciation," while stressing that the former first lady would likely avoid publicly expressing irritation.
Royal aides have not commented on the jewelry change, and there is no indication from Buckingham Palace or Trump representatives that any dispute exists between the two women. Palace insiders would likely argue that selecting a historically significant Anglo-American brooch for a solemn ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery was entirely consistent with royal diplomatic practice.
Still, the episode highlights the degree to which even small gestures involving the monarchy and Trump family are now scrutinized for hidden political or personal meaning. The White House visit had otherwise been framed as a success, with Trump publicly describing Charles as "a great guy" and praising the state dinner as "very special."
