Google is facing new scrutiny over its artificial intelligence partnerships and workplace culture after a former employee at Google DeepMind accused the company of retaliatory dismissal following protests against technology allegedly connected to the Israel-Gaza war.

The dispute, now headed toward a UK employment tribunal, centers on claims by an AI engineer from Google DeepMind's London office who says he was effectively forced out after criticizing the company's military-related AI partnerships and organizing internal opposition among employees.

According to legal filings cited by The Guardian, the engineer distributed leaflets inside Google offices accusing the company of supplying "military AI" connected to the conflict in Gaza. One flyer reportedly stated: "Google provides military AI to forces committing genocide" and asked colleagues, "Is your paycheck worth this?"

The employee, who has Palestinian heritage and requested anonymity, also circulated emails criticizing Google's decision in 2025 to revise its AI principles and remove previous commitments restricting the development of technologies linked to weapons or surveillance systems.

His tribunal claim alleges discrimination based on protected beliefs as well as retaliation tied to whistleblowing activity and workplace organizing efforts.

The engineer argues that after a series of meetings with human resources officials, he was gradually sidelined and removed from his position in September. Google disputes that account and maintains the employee resigned voluntarily.

A spokesperson for Google DeepMind rejected the allegations, telling reporters the employee's version of events "does not accurately reflect the facts."

The case lands at a particularly sensitive moment for major technology companies increasingly moving into government and defense-related artificial intelligence work. Over the last several years, Google DeepMind has expanded beyond academic AI research into commercial partnerships involving governments, public institutions and national security-linked infrastructure.

That shift has fueled growing internal tension among employees who originally joined the company under the belief that its work would focus primarily on scientific research and humanitarian applications.

Some current and former staff members told reporters that concerns intensified after Google revised portions of its AI ethics framework in 2025, a move critics interpreted as softening previous restrictions on military and surveillance applications.

Another anonymous DeepMind employee said internal concern extended beyond the Israel-Gaza conflict itself and reflected broader fears about advanced AI systems being deployed by governments in ways that could strengthen surveillance, military targeting or authoritarian control.

At the center of much of the controversy is Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion cloud computing and AI agreement signed in 2021 between Google, Amazon and the Israeli government.

The contract provides cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure to Israeli ministries and state institutions. Reporting and internal documents cited by critics suggest elements of Israel's defense and intelligence apparatus have also had access to or expressed interest in related technologies, especially following the escalation of conflict after 2023.

Google has repeatedly denied that Project Nimbus was designed for highly classified military operations and has insisted its AI policies require human oversight in sensitive applications.

Still, opposition inside the company has continued to grow. Hundreds of employees have reportedly signed internal petitions or participated in organizing campaigns demanding tighter restrictions on government and military use of Google's AI technologies.
