Prince William appeared this week in Istanbul surrounded by some of the same lifelong friends who once formed the shared social backbone of both him and Prince Harry, offering a fresh public glimpse into how the princes' personal worlds have diverged since Harry and Meghan Markle left royal life in 2020.

The Prince of Wales traveled to Turkey to watch Aston Villa F.C. win the Europa League, but photographs from the celebrations attracted attention well beyond football. Standing beside William were Ben Dawes, Thomas van Straubenzee and Edward van Cutsem-names deeply embedded in the social fabric of the royal family for decades.

For royal watchers, the images reinforced a quieter but increasingly visible reality: many of the men who once moved fluidly between both brothers now appear publicly aligned far more closely with William.

The shift has unfolded gradually since Harry and Meghan stepped back from senior royal duties and relocated to California. What initially looked like a dispute between brothers has, over time, widened into a broader reshaping of friendships, loyalties and social circles surrounding the House of Windsor.

The Istanbul trip highlighted just how intertwined those relationships once were.

Thomas van Straubenzee has long been described as one of William's closest confidants. The van Straubenzee and van Cutsem families were fixtures throughout the princes' childhoods, appearing at weddings, holidays, charity events and royal milestones. Members of both families have served as godparents, ushers and trusted companions to the royal brothers since their school years.

For Harry, the emotional history runs particularly deep.

Thomas's late brother, Henry van Straubenzee, was widely regarded as Harry's closest childhood friend before Henry died in a car accident in 2002 at age 18. Harry has frequently spoken publicly about grief and the long shadow cast by personal loss following the death of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, and friends from that era formed a core part of his early adult life.

Yet public appearances increasingly suggest that circle has fractured alongside the wider royal split.

There have reportedly been no public sightings of Harry and Thomas together since 2015, while Thomas has repeatedly appeared alongside William at sporting events, royal engagements and private celebrations. Harry, meanwhile, is still believed to maintain ties with Thomas's brother Charlie van Straubenzee, who served as an usher at Harry and Meghan's 2018 Windsor wedding.

The tension surrounding parts of the old friendship network became more explicit after Harry's Oprah Winfrey interview and later the publication of his memoir, Spare.

In Spare, Harry suggested he had grown disillusioned with some members of the van Cutsem circle following criticism directed at him and Meghan after they stepped away from royal duties. One episode that drew attention involved Rose Astor, wife of Hugh van Cutsem, who posted a message on social media shortly after the Oprah interview that many interpreted as mocking the Sussexes' decision to "step back."

"I am standing back as a senior member of my tax return, because I'd rather drink coffee, see my friends, love my family and do yoga," Astor wrote in the widely circulated post.

When later approached by the Daily Mail, Astor reportedly declined to elaborate, saying only: "I'm so sorry, I can't say anything. I'm sure you understand. I'm going to be in so much trouble."

The Istanbul photographs also arrived days after another public remark intensified discussion about Harry's changing relationships within the royal-adjacent circle.

Mike Tindall, husband of Zara Tindall and a longtime member of the extended royal social network, recently joked during a live podcast appearance that others at his wedding handled themselves better than "Harry, when he was fun."

The comment, though delivered casually, generated headlines in Britain because it implied a distinction between the Harry many friends once knew and the figure he has become following years of public conflict with the monarchy.

Neither Buckingham Palace nor representatives for Harry and Meghan have commented on the latest speculation surrounding the brothers' friendship circles.
