Meghan Markle has reignited speculation about her strained relationship with King Charles III after sharing previously unseen photographs from her 2018 royal wedding to Prince Harry, including images prominently featuring the monarch during the couple's eighth wedding anniversary celebrations.
The Instagram post, published to mark eight years since the Sussexes married at St George's Chapel in Windsor, quickly drew scrutiny from royal commentators and British media outlets, many of whom interpreted Charles' inclusion as more than a nostalgic family gesture. In royal circles, where symbolism often carries outsized political weight, even a carefully selected photograph can trigger fresh debate about reconciliation, loyalty and influence inside the House of Windsor.
Meghan captioned the post simply: "Eight years ago today...," accompanying a carousel of personal images that included wedding moments, reception photographs and appearances by figures close to the couple, including Elton John and Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland. Missing from the montage, however, were Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, a detail widely noted in British coverage.
The photograph attracting the most attention showed Charles walking Meghan partway down the aisle in 2018 after her father, Thomas Markle Sr., withdrew from attending the wedding following health problems and tabloid controversy. At the time, Kensington Palace stated that Charles was "pleased to be able to welcome Ms Markle to the Royal Family in this way."
Meghan later described the emotional circumstances surrounding that moment in the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, recalling that she told Charles: "I've lost my dad in this." She also said she personally asked him to accompany her during the ceremony.
Royal author Ingrid Seward argued the anniversary post appeared intentional rather than accidental. Seward said Meghan "doesn't do anything without purpose" and suggested the Duchess may have been signalling that she and Harry remain "still very much part of your family."
Such interpretations remain speculative, but they arrive against the backdrop of years of public tension between the Sussexes and the royal institution. Since stepping back from senior royal duties in 2020 and relocating to California, Harry and Meghan have repeatedly criticized palace operations and media treatment through interviews, documentaries and Harry's memoir Spare.
Those disclosures strained relationships with several senior royals, particularly Prince William, while King Charles has generally maintained a more restrained public posture toward the conflict. Royal observers have long debated whether Charles privately remains more open to communication with Harry than other members of the family.
Seward suggested Charles' personality could complicate any reconciliation effort, describing him as someone inclined to avoid direct confrontation. She also argued Meghan likely recognizes Charles remains "the number one man" within the institution and may see maintaining some connection with him as strategically important for both family stability and public positioning.
At the same time, the anniversary post also revived attention on Meghan's own estrangement from her father. Thomas Markle Sr. has not publicly reconciled with his daughter since before the wedding, despite intermittent reports of attempted communication over recent years.
That parallel added another emotional layer to the social media tribute. What appeared on the surface to be a polished anniversary celebration quickly became intertwined with unresolved questions about family fracture, loyalty and public image management on both sides of the Atlantic.
Seward also raised the issue of Queen Camilla, suggesting the Queen would likely remain cautious about Meghan despite maintaining outward civility. According to Seward, Camilla would never behave rudely toward the Duchess but would still approach the relationship carefully given the years of public turmoil surrounding the Sussexes.
