King Charles III's reported efforts to reconnect with Prince Harry and his California-based grandchildren are said to be exposing fresh tensions within the Royal Family, with new reports claiming the planned reunion has left Catherine, Princess of Wales, caught between supporting the monarch and standing by Prince William.
The claims come as Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are widely expected to travel to the United Kingdom in July for Invictus Games-related events. While Buckingham Palace has not confirmed the family's travel plans or any private meetings, multiple reports suggest the King hopes to use the visit to strengthen ties with his younger son and grandchildren after years of limited contact.
The reported outreach has fueled new speculation about the state of relationships inside the House of Windsor, particularly between King Charles, Prince William, Princess Kate and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
According to sources cited in recent reporting, Charles views the potential visit as an opportunity to spend time with Archie and Lilibet, whom he has reportedly seen only rarely since Harry and Meghan relocated to California after stepping back as senior working royals in 2020.
The King's reported position is shaped in part by personal circumstances. Charles continues to undergo treatment for cancer, making family reconciliation a higher priority, according to several royal commentators.
That objective, however, is said to be creating unease elsewhere within the family.
An insider claimed Catherine supports the King's desire to reconnect with Harry but remains conflicted about Meghan's possible participation in the visit.
"Kate is an incredibly forgiving person, but there has been so much hurt stirred up over the years by Meghan, it's impossible for her to simply forget everything and move on overnight," the source said.
The insider added that while the Princess of Wales would like to help Charles rebuild family relationships, Meghan's involvement "changes the dynamic completely."
Neither Kensington Palace nor Buckingham Palace has commented publicly on those claims.
Reports also suggest Prince William remains deeply opposed to any rapid reconciliation.
Royal writer Tom Sykes, writing in The Royalist Substack, described the King's reported outreach as "an astonishing betrayal" of his "loyal and dutiful heir." Sykes further reported that William has told friends he does not wish to reconcile with Harry, although those claims have not been independently confirmed by the Palace.
The reported disagreements follow years of public fallout between the Sussexes and senior members of the Royal Family.
Harry's memoir Spare detailed disputes with William and included allegations that his brother physically confronted him during an argument involving Meghan. The book also revisited tensions surrounding the 2018 bridesmaid dress dispute before Harry and Meghan's wedding.
Earlier, Meghan told Oprah Winfrey in 2021 that media reports claiming she had made Kate cry were inaccurate, saying it was Kate who later apologized following the disagreement. Catherine has never publicly addressed the episode.
Additional controversy emerged after royal author Omid Scobie's book alleged that Catherine was among family members who raised concerns regarding Archie's skin color before his birth. Scobie later attributed the publication of names to an editing error, while Buckingham Palace has consistently rejected allegations of racism against the Royal Family.
The renewed speculation surrounding Harry's return has also revived broader discussion about whether meaningful reconciliation remains possible.
According to another insider, Catherine had quietly hoped the approaching 30th anniversary of Princess Diana's death next year might provide an opportunity for the brothers to begin repairing their relationship through private conversations away from public attention.
The source claimed Catherine had hoped Harry and William could eventually meet privately before tensions escalated further, but suggested Meghan's presence during any family visit could complicate those expectations.
