President Donald Trump intensified his rhetoric against Iran after U.S. forces struck Iranian military equipment on Larak Island, posting an AI-generated video depicting explosions on Kharg Island and later declaring that Iran was "officially a Failed Nation. IT IS DEAD!"
The video, posted on Truth Social on Sunday, Aug. 30, appeared to show an oil facility engulfed in explosions and carried the caption, "Kharg Island being blown to smithereens!!! President DJT." There was no evidence that U.S. forces had attacked Kharg Island during the latest military operation.
Reuters reported that a U.S. official said Kharg was not targeted. Vice President JD Vance later said Trump's post was intended as a warning to Tehran rather than confirmation of a military strike against the island.
Iranian officials rejected the portrayal. Hamid Bovard, chief executive of the National Iranian Oil Company, said operations at Kharg had continued and described Trump's post as "laughable," according to reports.
The actual U.S. strike targeted two Iranian launchers on Larak Island, roughly 660 kilometers, or 410 miles, east of Kharg. A U.S. official said forces linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were preparing the launchers to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
The operation marked the first publicly acknowledged U.S. strikes against Iran since late July and renewed fears of another sustained round of direct military confrontation. The conflict began in late February with U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran and has since disrupted shipping and energy markets around the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran responded to the Larak attack by launching missiles and drones at U.S. bases in Jordan, according to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The IRGC said it targeted the King Hussein and Al-Azraq bases and caused "heavy damage" to maintenance facilities, technical infrastructure and areas used to station fighter aircraft.
Those claims could not be independently verified. Jordan's military said its air-defense systems intercepted eight missiles that entered the kingdom's airspace.
Trump followed the military exchange with another Truth Social post Monday, Aug. 31, escalating his characterization of Iran's political and economic condition.
"Iran is officially a Failed Nation. IT IS DEAD!" Trump wrote. He said Iran had "no Navy," "no Air Force" and "no currency," while asserting that inflation had reached 300% and that the country's leadership was in "total disarray."
Available economic figures challenge parts of that assessment. Iran's annual inflation rate was reported at about 66% in July, while the country's central bank said Sept. 1 that Iran retained sufficient foreign-currency resources and rejected suggestions that its economy had collapsed.
Trump also accused Iranian authorities of killing more than 100,000 protesters and called for the country's leaders to face prosecution for what he described as "war crimes against humanity." He did not provide evidence supporting the 100,000 figure in the post.
Kharg Island remains particularly sensitive because of its importance to Iranian energy exports. Before the war, about 90% of Iran's crude exports were reported to pass through the island, although its role has been affected by the fighting and a U.S. naval blockade targeting Iranian oil shipments.
U.S. Central Command previously struck more than 90 Iranian military targets on Kharg Island in March while saying the island's oil infrastructure had deliberately been spared. That earlier operation differs from the latest Larak strike and from the AI-generated imagery Trump posted Sunday.
