Developer Niantic paved its way to success when it first released the augmented reality mobile game "Pokemon Go" in July 2016. Now, the infamous developer is hard at work in developing the upcoming free-to-play mobile game "Harry Potter: Wizards Unite." But it seems that gamers will have to wait until 2019 to get their hands on the forthcoming game.
According to Engadget, Niantic announced that "Harry Potter: Wizards Unite" will be released sometime in 2019, contrary to the expectations that it will be launched this year. Niantic said in November 2017 that it's already working on the "Harry Potter" inspired mobile game, which focuses on location-based and augmented reality game.
For now, Niantic released a teaser for "Harry Potter: Wizards Unite" although it doesn't show much of the mobile game except that the notorious Golden Snitch made an appearance in the short clip. The teaser shows a player reciting a spell - "immobilus" that stops something from moving. A warning poster then showed up that wizards and witches should look forward to experiencing a boding evil.
Niantic's press release says that "Harry Potter: Wizards Unite" players will be able to "explore real-world surroundings to unravel a global mystery, cast spells, and encounter fantastic beasts and iconic characters along the way." Apart from learning spells, players will team up with other players to fight creatures through augmented reality.
Those that already played "Pokemon Go" will be able to get a picture of how the upcoming mobile game performs. The only difference is that they will have to deal with "Harry Potter" characters and creatures instead of catching Squirtles or Charmanders.
Inspired by J. K. Rowling's Wizarding World in the "Harry Potter" franchise, the upcoming mobile game, which will be available on iOS and Android, will also enable players to visit real-world locations as well as find mysterious artifacts. As what Niantic said, the game gets its inspiration from the developer's current mobile games "Pokemon Go" and "Ingress."
Despite the delay, Niantic, who is currently working with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and WB Games San Francisco in developing "Harry Potter: Wizards Unite," launched a website where future players of the upcoming mobile game can get updates. The developer though did not disclose any more details about the setback.
Based in San Francisco, California, Niantic, Inc. was formed in 2010 with a huge background in creating and developing augmented reality mobile games. A few months back, the developer released a teaser of the augmented technology that they have been working on for years called the Niantic Real World Platform. As such, this technology will be put to good use in the coming years, especially on the upcoming game.
