Taking the stage during the 2018 Singapore Motor Show, Japanese car maker Nissan made a huge commitment to releasing a full range of electric cars in the country. The carmaker added that it should be able to roll out all of its electric car models into the country by 2022. Nissan made the announcement on Thursday. The company promised that all of its futures car models that will hit the Singaporean market will either be fully battery powered or hybrids.
In a statement to the Strait Times, Tan Chong Motorhead of sales and marketing for Nissan Ron Lim said that the carmaker will release up to seven models of electric cars in Singapore. Mr. Lim did not provide the exact date as to when the first car will hit showrooms.
The first car from the lineup to hit Singaporean showrooms will be the Nissan Leaf, a battery-powered car which first made its debut at the motor show at Suntec convention center. Based on a data sheet released to the public, the Nissan Leaf will have a range of at least 250km. The Leaf is expected to snatch a price tag below $150,000.
Slated next to the Nissan Leaf is the Serena e-Power. The Serena is an MPV that has an electric motor. What separates it from the Leaf is its unique feature of having a small petrol generator that constantly charges its batteries. The Nissan Serena e-Power is expected to hit the market within the second the half of this year.
Electric cars have taken the center show at the 2019 Singapore Motor Show. A handful of newly developed car models were unveiled and a majority of these models are considered zero-emissions, which mean they are totally environment-friendly. Among these growing fleet of cars are the Hyundai Kona Electric and Jaguar I-Pace. Both these cars promise a range of more than 400km.
Traditional carmakers are not the only ones that are making headways in Singapore. At the same motor show, ride-hailing company Grab announced that it had bought a total of 200 Hyundai Kona Electrics cars. Grab added that the company will roll out 20 of these electric cars in Singapore by Friday.
Grab said that rental for the battery-powered car is at $80 per day which is almost comparable to the company's petrol models. Grab said that its electric cars get a 30 percent discount at SP Group's network of chargers.
