Netflix has yet to announce The Umbrella Academy Season 2's coming, but fans have a strong feeling that the show will return. With the previous season finale's major cliffhanger, a second installment has a lot of something to tell. Comic book series creator Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba, and showrunner Steve Blackman are even optimistic they will do another batch of episodes.
"If we're so lucky to get another season or 2, I'd have a really good understanding of what I'd want to do," showrunner Blackman said, via Radio Times. He also added he already thought it through. With the show's explosive cliffhanger ending, he now knows what he wants to do in The Umbrella Academy Season 2.
Way, on the other hand, wants to avoid Game of Thrones' fate when HBO takes over its story as George R.R. Martin has yet to finish the book series, which the show is based. "The goal for us is to stay ahead of the show," he said. The former vocalist of My Chemical Romance revealed he and Ba are now on The Umbrella Academy Series 3 of its comic version, so they are already ahead of the show's event.
Way and Ba are only going to take three to four months break before they start writing The Umbrella Academy Series 4. So if Netflix orders for The Umbrella Academy Season 2, the 41-year-old musician said the next stories are already planned out.
So what will happen if The Umbrella Academy Season 2 comes out? According to Inverse, fans may see where Number 5 (Aidan Gallagher) took his siblings. To recall, Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) thought she could stop Vanya (Ellen Page) and save the world, but the latter's energy hit the moon and broke it to million pieces that rushed down to earth. So, Number 5 decided to travel through time again, took his siblings, and they then disappeared just in time before a blaze destroyed the city.
Blackman told The Hollywood Reporter they had no idea where the siblings went and what happened to them. Unfortunately, they didn't solve the apocalypse or even save the world, which quite deviates from the comic. The time travel would change the characters' path, like what Hazel (Cameron Britton) wanted to do.
However, Blackman doubts if Hazel can forget about the apocalypse, his previous job, and live a normal life with Agnes (Sheila McCarthy) in The Umbrella Academy Season 2. "Some sort of conflict or tragedy would have to happen," he said.
Meanwhile, if ever Netflix asks for another set of episodes of The Umbrella Academy Season 2, Blackman revealed it took them 18 months to finish a season. So, fans would be up for a long waiting game as a new installment might be out in 2020.
