Wentworth season 7 is gearing up for its release on Foxtel in Australia. Following its broadcast Down Under, fans of the Oz TV prison drama will be able to watch all-new episodes on Netflix.
Production for Wentworth season 7 started last April 2018, as Fox Showcase confirmed. The widely-followed series usually airs first on Foxtel between April to June before Netflix releases the new episodes for binge-watching on the streaming platform.
As with previous releases, Netflix may likely have the latest episodes of Wentworth season 7 up on the site this summer or early fall. Essentially, this means that fans who follow the show on the streaming platform could enjoy the new installment before September 2019.
Meanwhile, ahead of the premiere of Wentworth season 7, Foxtel announced that the hard-hitting series would be back for season 8 as per TV Tonight. However, production for this installment won't happen until 2020, which could push back the launch date of season 8 to later next year or early 2021.
But while season 7 will have 12 episodes, viewers of Wentworth will be pleased to know that season 8 will be an expanded 20 episodes. The good news comes amid rumors that Foxtel planned to end the show last year and fans launched a massive Save Wentworth campaign to let the network know that the long-running and award-winning show still has a big loyal audience.
"Wentworth has captivated audiences in Australia and all over the world with its gritty nail-biting storylines, remarkable performances by an extensive ensemble cast and high production values," the press release stated to confirm that Wentworth isn't going off the air. "The commissioning of these additional episodes will see it reach an extraordinary 100 episodes."
Meanwhile, Wentworth season 6 ended with a big and bloody fight between Rita (played by Lynette Curran) and Drago (played by Natalia Novikova) in prison and the interrogation of an inmate involved in helping another one escape has almost concluded. But the appearance of a new prison head could shake things up.
With Drago gone, it's also possible for Marie (played by Susie Porter) to step up and be the second leader. Yet fans are hoping for a showdown between another inmate and Rita after the latter beat Drago.
Wentworth has been compared to the U.S. series Orange is the New Black. The American show, however, is a largely a comedy while the Aussie series is so dark and oppressive yet quite realistic. The show reveals the real hardships of prison life, and because of its treatment, Wentworth has earned a lot of awards and recognition locally and abroad.
