A 5G surgery for the first time stuns the mobile industry as a surgeon performs his operation three miles away from the patient and the operating table.
The Mobile World Congress was indeed filled with innovations and surprises but none of them matches the real-life 5G surgery witnessed by the audience on screen. It was not like any other video captured surgery though. What made the operation special was it was done real time with the directing doctor instructing from the MWC venue which was three miles away from the hospital where the operation on a patient's colon was done.

Thanks to the 5G technology Dr. Antonio Maria de Lacy, a surgeon from the Hospital Clinic Barcelona was able to give real-time instructions with no time delays to the doctors performing the actual surgery. De Lacy proudly said that she was even able to draw on her screen and doctors on the hospital see the instruction real time as well.
De Lacy clarified that a risky move such as the 5G surgery is only possible through the help of the 5G technology which is 100 times faster than 4G. With 5G there is no lag time between the users' device and the device on the other end regardless of the distance meaning there is zero latency.
During the actual 5G surgery which was seen by the MWC audience, De Lacy was able to point specific points on the patient's body like the nerves that the doctors are not supposed to cut or areas on the patient's organs which needed to be maintained using a telestrator. The surgeon said that in the past, they had to freeze the image before they can draw anything and give instructions, which technically means minutes of delay during the surgery.
The 5G surgery is another breakthrough in the field of medicine as De Lacy said it could cut down the number of unexecuted surgery due to lack of available expert surgeons. As of the moment, the lack of available surgeons resulted in almost 143 million canceled or delayed operations. With the 5G technology, experts could guide the operation thoroughly without their presence inside the operating room.
The 5G surgery which was first witnessed at the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Fira Gran Via, Barcelona showcased the benefits of the 5G technology not only in communication, business and other life aspects. What the audience witnessed high definition inside the auditorium showed a real-world benefit even at life and death situations.
