The Phoenix Suns are expected to go after Terry Rozier of the Boston Celtics, league sources suggest. The Suns, currently languishing at the bottom of the NBA standings, is a franchise that has a long list of excellent point guards, and ironically, they are in dire need of a playmaker.
According to Bleacher Report, the Phoenix Suns has one of the best young cores in the NBA. Led by the budding superstar Devin Booker and the number one overall pick from this year's draft, Deandre Ayton, the Suns have proven that they can win against any team in the NBA. The Suns have picked up victories against some playoff-bound teams, most notably against the number one team in the NBA, the Milwaukee Bucks who they swept this season.
But that's just about the highlight for this struggling franchise this season. The Suns are consistent inconsistently. One night, they could play like a championship contender, and then the next game, they would play like an NCAA Division II team. But clearly, the talent is already there.
Basketball analysts and experts agree that that the Suns are just a few key players away from being a real NBA contender. The Suns already have talented and young wing players in TJ Warren, Josh Jackson, Mikal Bridges, and Kelly Oubre. The Suns also have Ayton and a reliable backup in Richaun Holmes at the 5. And then there's Booker. All that the Suns need are a reliable point guard and a multi-dimension power forward that would free up their wing players to play their natural positions. And this is where Terry Rozier of the Boston Celtics would come in.
The Phoenix Suns started the season with Isaiah Canaan at the point guard spot, with the rookies Elie Okobo and De'Anthony Melton playing behind Canaan. The troika of point guards isn't exactly what the long-time Suns fans are used to see, especially, since the Suns used to have the likes of Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Kevin Johnson, Paul Westphal, Goran Dragic, and Eric Bledsoe, to run the show.
The Suns have long since waived Canaan and briefly experimented with Booker at the point. While Booker is talented enough to play the point guard position, it is clear that Phoenix needs him more to be the scorer that he is.
All season, the lack of experienced point guards have limited the young Suns' development. According to Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer, Phoenix offered a protected first-round pick for Rozier before the 2018-19 season started. The Celtics, however, wanted an unprotected first-rounder that the Suns didn't want to give up. And rightly so, since the upcoming 2019 NBA draft is projected to be one of the best and deepest draft classes in recent years.
However, the Phoenix Suns organization, not to mention its fanbase, still have their sights trained on Terry Rozier. Rozier is averaging 8.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.1 assists while playing under 23 minutes per game this season. Last season, Rozier registered 11.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in under 26 minutes.
Rozier is playing behind the All-Star guard Kyrie Irving and Rozier is reportedly unhappy with the lack of playing time. That being said, the Suns can give Rozier all the court time that he wants, and in return, he can give the Phoenix Suns the point guard that they need. Regardless of who the Phoenix Suns pick up in the upcoming NBA draft, Terry Rozier may have found a new home in the Phoenix Suns.
